Advantages and Disadvantages of Concrete Roof Tiles

With all the new types of roofing materials out in the market today, the decision making on which one is ideal for your house can be quite difficult. Most people base their choices on houses they see near their place, on the television, magazines, through the Internet, or from the advices of friends, relatives, or a contractor. In case you are also one of the many individuals who are still seeking for answers on which roofing material would best suit your place, why not try on checking concrete roof tiles?

Concrete roof tiles are designed to outlast any weather condition without breaking easily like most roof tiles in the market. If you are interested in this type of roofing material, you would want to check out its pros and cons before engaging on purchasing and installing it on the roof of your house.

Pros:

·         Durability – when it comes to absorbing weight and all sorts of natural elements, concrete is one of the best in this business. It can withstand continuous rain fall which can be very disastrous to the other types of roofing materials. Unlike clay roof tiles, concrete roofing does not easily break or acquire any damages when walked on as it is quite sturdy. In addition, it also would not bulge or get dislodged easily as compared to the other materials. Falling debris are also not that big of a threat as when having clay roof tiles, asphalt shingles, and other materials due to its strength and capability to absorb blows. However, just like all the roofing materials, it also has its expiration date. In short, it also has its limits where you will have to tend and mend its acquired damages especially those due to long use. Regular checkup and maintenance is also a must even with this sturdy type of roof tile.

·         Style – although some may find this not as elegant as clay roof tiles, slate tiles, and other beautiful roofing materials, there are still some homeowners who prefer the visual appeal of concrete roof tiles over the others. Basically, the opinion of other people does not matter as in the end it will still be the decision or choice of the owner of the house that would count.

 Cons:

·         Weight – the most notable disadvantage of using concrete as your roof tile is the heavy burden your house is going to carry. This would require stronger foundation and beams in order for the house to support the overall weight of the roofing materials. Improper installation of this material would be risky and dangers especially during earthquakes.

·         Sealant – another downside of using concrete roof tiles is the need for sealant. Without this product though, you will be constantly having dripping water problems inside your house. Water easily sips into the concrete which is why it is very important to make it waterproof in order to prevent any damages in the future. There are various sealants that are quite affordable and great for sealing purposes. However, this will add to the installation expenses.
